Fifty years ago, a young painter, Marcel Baril, left Canada for Paris. The art he produced there is in fact a diary in which he recorded his thoughts, memories, dreams and desires. His paintings deal with childhood, love, women, the mal de vivre, death, and life as a multi-coloured, extraordinary spectacle. A cross between naïve art, surrealism and fantastic art, his work defies categorization. The Hidden Easel by Philippe Baylaucq explores the art of a man who has resisted trends and well-trodden paths, remaining true to himself.
